Yesterday, I had the pleasure of modeling reading small group instruction at one of my PreK-8th Grade schools. According to the teacher, none of the students in this particular second grade class met benchmark at the beginning of the year. Although the teacher saw great improvement at the middle of the year assessment, all students again scored below benchmark. Utilizing the West Virginia phonics lessons, I began with the short vowel a lesson, which included focusing on mouth formation when making the short vowel sounds, phoneme mapping using Elkonin boxes, writing dictated words and phrases, and decodable text. These elements are very important, particularly for struggling readers. When students struggled with auditorily hearing the short a sound, I was able to refer them back to mouth and tongue placement. When mapping the sounds, this allowed students to segment the sounds in each word and subsequently write the sounds they heard. One student had a history of struggling with reading and subsequent behavior issues. At first, he was reluctant to participate. However, after feeling success in this activity, this student began focusing on instruction and misbehaviors diminished. It was a joy to work with these students, especially seeing students excited about feeling success in reading. I'm looking forward to another great day working with students. Hi, I am a teacher and intervention coach at an elementary school in Minnesota. We have been using the West Virginia Phonics lessons this school year and love how they are set up. This week we discovered the site was down! Do you know if it is temporary? If not, is there another place we can find the lessons. THANKS SO MUCH!

Hi Patty! I am a first year teacher in Mississippi and attended my first phonics training (LETRS) in October. The presenter discussed the West Virginia Phonics lessons. I have been using it as a guide to create lesson for my reading groups. I discovered today that it was not available. This a wonderful site that is extremely beneficial to classrooms all over. Please let me know if you have any further information concerning this site. Enjoy your weekend - Monday morning will be here before we know it.

Yes, I also was not able to get on the site. I am a Title I teacher, and I have been using the site for several of my groups. I really hope this site is still available!

I can't access the site either but would love to! I am also a reading interventionist, and these lessons were recommended to me by another interventionist.

Has anyone heard from the West Virginia Phonics Lesson site yet? I am ready for the lessons involving vowel teams and can find them anywhere. They were by far the best lessons for intervention! My students had major gains before Christmas and I owe it all to West Virginia Phonics Lessons!

I found a site where I can access the West Virginia Phonics lessons. Try this one: http://www.hickman.k12tn.net/departments/response_to_intervention/literacy_interventions/phonics/west_virginia_reading_first_explicit_phonics_lesso/ Sorry it's such a long URL.....it's a school district that is apparently using the lessons and have them saved to their website.

You are so welcome, Linda. I had the link saved on my desktop, and when I tried to use this year, there was nothing there! I panicked and started searching for it. I found this website during my search. I was happy to find it and share with you all. I am in the process of saving all of the lessons to my computer!

I tried going to the website and it won't load. Any idea as to what I'm doing wrong? 2/11/2015 08:47:51 pm
Yesterday I contacted the Dept. of Education in WV at 304-558-2696 and a lady named Kathleen Garten sent me all the lessons via email. Made me one happy interventionist!

Are all of the lessons on the Tools 4 Reading site? They appear to start with skill 2. What is skill 1?
